My Vision on Energy
Akwa Ibom State is endowed with enormous mineral and energy resources. My Vision
for this sub-sector is to develop and utilize the mineral and energy resources
as a vehicle for industrialization, wealth creation, employment generation and
poverty alleviation. The mineral resources of the State can be divided into two
broad segments: the oil and gas and the solid minerals. The energy resources
here imply the generation of electricity from our indigenous natural resources.
Akwa Ibom State is endowed with enormous oil and gas resources. It is rated the
4th largest producer of oil and gas in Nigeria with a daily production rate of
500,000 barrels of oil (Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, then Akwa Ibom State ). This is
a significant contribution to the national oil and gas output of 2.4 million
barrels of oil daily; also in term of fiscal contribution to the natural purse.
Large oil and gas reserve have been found in Ibeno, Ikot Abasi, Esit Eket, -
Onna, Eastern Obolo and Ikot Abasi. We will consolidate on this and ensure that
we achieve the following:
- Completion of the Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ikot Abasi to make
electricity available at all time and possible expansion.
- Explore the
possibility of other unconventional sources of energy such as solar, wind,
biogas, waste to energy project.

Electricity Projects
- Ibom Power Project
- Development of gas reserves for electricity generation
- Vigorous rural electrification scheme has placed almost all rural ares on the
national grid
- 800 electricity projects
Government plans to provide uninterrupted power supply in Akwa Ibom State, with
a surplus to be fed into the national grid throgh the Ibom Power Project. The
project is in two phases. The first phase is more than 90 percent completed with
the installation of 2 No. GE frame 6 and 1 No. frame 9 gas turbine, offering a
total capacity of 180 MW, the installation of a 132/11KV transformer as well as
the construction of a 45km – 132 KV “double circuit power evacuation line from
Ikot Abasi to Eket sub station. Of the 180MW, 60MW is to be dedicated to meet
Akwa Ibom’s energy needs.
The second phase of the project is expected to generate an additional 465MW that
will feed the National grid through a transmission line to Afam sub station. The
132 KV transmission line between Eket, Uyo and Itu is to be straightened to
ensure the evacuation of the full capacity of the first phase.
There are over 800 rural electrification projects under the Inter- Ministerial
Direct Labour projects at various stages of completion across the State. Another
800 transformers are to be procured by the State government. The full impact of
this shall be appreciated when the IPP comes on stream. A new 330 KV
transmission line from Ikot Abasi to Ikot Ekpene with a new sub station in Ikot
Abasi is to be constructed to evacuate power from the second phase of Ibom Power
Plant. It is expected that by the time the Ibom Power Plant is switched on,
every community in the State shall be energized and the entire Akwa Ibom State
shall be aglow not just with electricity but with diverse power-dependent
economic activities that will provide 3000 indirect employment opportunities, in
addition to the 1000 direct employment opportunities.
98 electricity projects commissioned accross several local governments.
