My Vision on Roads
Road maintenance poses a headache to men and women of integrity, who would want
to see durable Nigerian roads, built with the best designs and materials, to
last. But to the corrupt, a road contract is a bonanza, and the gateway to the
Nigerian goldmine and windfall called 'empowerment'.
Road maintenance has always been a thorny problem throughout the federation.
Roads don't last; they get washed away; highways become impassible; communities
are cut off from each other; accidents result with heavy casualties. Urban trunk
highways are affected, not to talk of rural roads.
Rather than concentrate only on the more glamorous construction of new networks,
except where necessary, my Administration will achieve more for less expenditure
through infrastructural maintenance. To maintain access for all part of the
State will entail budget resources allocation to repairs, improvement and
general maintenance of the existing road network. However, new tarred roads
opened through high population density areas that have hitherto not been served,
will also be a matter of priority for my Administration.

Road Projects
- Opening of new roads
- Dualisation of roads
- Rehabilitation of roads
- Building of drainages
I have demonstrated a vigorous road construction and rehabilitation scheme since
2007, more than any other period in the history of Akwa Ibom State. With this
scheme headquarters of the 31 local government councils have been linked with
about a 20km tarred road. Several roads that had existed without attention since
the inception of the state, have been tarred by my administration. New roads are
opened up and many are being rehabilitated.
I have also embarked on many road construction projects in the three senatorial
zones and 31 local councils of the state. The projects are being handled by road
construction giants like Julius Berger, Setraco, Stemco, CCEE, ACE and Bass
Engineering, etc.
Contracts for road construction worth well over N80 billion have been awarded to
both foreign and local construction firms which include: Ekim Itam – Ekom Iman
road dualisation, Afaha-Obong – Ika – Etim Ekpo, cutting across 3 local
government councils, and Ikot-Ekpene – Abak road all at the cost of N43 billion.
Etebi – Enwang road, road network around the Union park, Ikot Ntan – Obiokpok –
Afaha-Offiong – Mbiokporo – Ikot-Edibon Section I and II, Eket urban roads lots
1 – 5, Nung Udoe Itak – Okoita – Use Ikot Amama – Ibiaku Ikot Esifia, Ikot Abasi
urban roads, lots 1 – 5, Oron urban roads, lots 1 – 3 and Ikot Ekpene urban
roads. A total of about 180km, that cuts across 20 local government councils, at
the cost of about 83 billion Naira.
