Education Makes a People Easy to Govern and Difficult to Colonise |
Incredible Vision, Concept, and Implementation |
Governor Akpabio has demonstrated strong commitment to leverage the abundant
human capital in Akwa Ibom State so as to average the knowledge component of the
state's economy and provide in abundance the requisite skills, knowledge, and
abilities to drive a modern knowledge based economy.
At the same time, the Governor has used education to fight militancy, poverty,
and dangerous crimes. This has led to the reformation of the Akwa Ibom person
and promotion of the elitist and ideological framework of the people through the
provision of statewide all expense paid free and compulsory education for
primary and secondary schools, the building of tertiary institutions, targeted
education and talent development for professionals and all round human capacity
development strategy. Actually, education is not free in many Nigerian states on
account of backdoor charges and levies. But in Akwa-Ibom, Governor Akpabio has
made education free because of the presence of legislation that makes imposition
of levies illegal and unnecessary. This positions the state government to take
up greater responsibilities in providing more resources and in redefining and
reforming education in Akwa Ibom State to the extent that government even pays
for NECO, SSCE and NABTEB examinations.
With Governor Akpabio's belief that "education makes a people easy to govern and
difficult to colonise" large scale reforms have risen in leaps and bounds to
promote equity, accessibility, social justice, redefined ethical values, and
science and technology in Akwa Ibom education. Education in Akwa Ibom has been
reformed to discourage corruption, academic dishonesty, misconducts, exam
malpractice and a host of other unethical practices. |
With provision of far more enhanced education infrastructure and deployment of
enabling legislation to create a conducive learning environment the state's
potentials for commerce, industry, mines, agriculture, tourism, and sports and
even foreign direct investment became widened.
NANS president had this to say, "we are more encouraged that at the time
Nigerian student's leaders are beginning to search for visible mentors whose
achievements are unparalleled and to agitate for free education, your
administration put in place and enforces it in such a way that the concept,
implementation and entire vision are simply incredible."
According to Excel Magazine, "The Governors' intervention initiatives for

promoting best practices in education can be deconstructed into 15 separate
action points: leadership; sound appointment; infrastructure; facilities for
teaching and learning; teachers' welfare; free and compulsory education;
funding; quality assurance; reading culture; integrity of examinations; training
and retraining; monitoring and supervision of private schools; skills
development; team work; and motivation." All these could only be achieved in one
sector through a clear cut laser sharp vision which His Excellency has brought
to bear on the Akwa Ibom education.
On 17th April, 2009, Governor Akpabio was decorated as Exam Ethics Chief Master
Marshal for pioneering work and exemplary leadership in promoting best practices in
education. His Excellency made history by being the first Governor in Nigeria to
be so decorated.
With Governor Akpabio in the saddle the state's intellectual capital has greatly
improved as shown in school enrolments and more sustainable lifestyles. The
governor is sowing the seeds that will germinate and grow into competent,
skilled scientists, technologists, engineers, doctors, pharmacists, architects,
and lawyers of tomorrow. |
